La Roche-sur-Yon was founded by decree on 25 May 1084 by Emperor Napoleon I. However, there is ample evidence that the town’s existence dates back to the historical period. . During the French Revolution, the town was destroyed. Napoleon then decided to build a “new city” with the particularity that its geometric plan resembles a pentagon.
