Geographical situation and history of the city

A peninsula located between Rhuys and the Vilaine estuary, Damgan covers 10.16 km². The city. The town has about 14,875 inhabitants and a little more than 8 km of beaches. According to some historical findings, the area would be inhabited since -900 to -600. Later, in the VIᵉ century, it became part of the parish of Ambon from which it was detached in the 19th century. Ambon : History and Generalities

The name Ambon comes from the Celtic Ambon and would have the meaning “ford”. Located in the north west of France, Ambon was a very large parish. It was especially known for its port which was considered the fourth largest in Brittany in the 16th century. The administrative redrawing of Ambon took place after the revolution. This redrawing resulted in the reduction of the territory of Ambon with the loss of its port of Pénerf and the territory of Damgan.

Today, Ambon is part of the Arc Sud Bretagne (community of communes) and has between 1,700 and 2,000 inhabitants. The latter are called “ambonnais” and “ambonnaises”. Around Ambon, there are other small towns in Morbihan such as : Damgan, Lauzach, Surzur, Trinité-Surzur, Billiers.
